Biomimicry Portfolio
Biomimicry is the practice of quieting our human cleverness and turning to nature as our mentor, biological strategies as our models, and living systems as our measure of successful and effective design inspired by 3.8 billion years of evolution.
As a graduate student studying Biomimicry and an aspiring practitioner, I created this space to share selected work from my Biomimicry portfolio and develop my Biomimicry communication skills. I hope you enjoy learning along with me...
Before we can learn to emulate nature, we must take the time to (re)connect in person with the living systems that share our ecosystem earth. This video honors and imagines the perspective of one of our planet’s most precious inhabitants: the earthworm. What can earthworms teach us about living in service of our ecosystem and creating conditions conducive to life?
All of earth’s most ingenious designs persist because they are adapted to their environment and employ strategies that fit into our planet’s operating conditions:
sunlight, water, and gravity
dynamic nonequilibrium
limits and boundaries
cyclic processes
Biomimicry teaches us to leverage Life’s Principles, as articulated by the Biomimicry Institute, to design in a way that elegantly solves our design challenges while creating conditions conducive to all life on earth.
Life’s Principles can be used to inform new designs or evaluate existing ones. As biomimicry practitioners, we ask:
“How would nature solve this design problem?”
By evaluating our design ideas and existing product and systems through the lens of Biomimicry, we can discover innovative applications of nature’s most brilliant strategies across disciplines and industries.
All over the world, biomimicry practitioners move and iterate through phases of the Biomimicry Design process to create innovative, sustainable design solutions to modern human challenges.
